The German Alps

Today, I took my first hike in the Alps. Flo, Jakob, and I went to Garmisch, which is about 40 minutes outside of Munich, for a multimedia workshop. After the workshop, we went on a short hike. I was happy to get out of the city for a day, and I found Garmisch to be a really beautiful town. Here are some of my favorites from the day:

Elba Island, Italy

Jakob and his family invited me along for a trip to their family home on Elba Island. Elba is in the Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Italy in the Tuscany region. Along with its beautiful scenery, beaches, and fabulous food, Elba also boasts a rich history. Napoleon was once exiled to the island for a short time in 1814.

For the trip, for better or for worse, I put down the Leica that Jakob so generously lets me borrow and picked up his new smartphone. Using the Retro Camera app, I took the following collection of pictures.

My cousin has the cutest little family, and they were awesome for this family portrait session. We went to Standley Lake just outside of Denver, Colorado. The sun sets behind the Rocky Mountains and gives the most beautiful quality of light for portraits.

I have always wanted to see Big Sur. I've romanticized this place in my mind ever since I was introduced to Jack Kerouac. On my 27th birthday (May 18, 2011), I finally got to see it. Jakob and I pulled out of the Santa Lucia mountains right into a view of the sea. It is one of the most beautiful places that I have seen in the States so far.

Ever since I moved to Orange County, I cannot help but notice how much people love their dogs here. I think I have seen every size, shape, breed, and doggy t-shirt in the past month. As a fun side project, I am documenting 'The Dogs of O.C.'

Gomez, a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix, stands at the top of Alta Laguna overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. He is believed to be 7-8 years old though his exact age is unknown. He was saved from a shelter. Already completely house-broken and with a gentle-spirit, the new owner cannot understand why he was ever abandoned.

Rose Bowl Flea Market

The Rose Bowl Flea Market is one of the largest outdoor flea markets in the States featuring about 2,500 vendors and attracting almost 20,000 visitors every second Sunday of the month. On Feb. 13, 2011, I found myself here at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. It was amazing to see all of the weird things that people bought. I decided to do a portrait series of people leaving the market.

Louis Herrera is the co-owner of L&L Collectibles, a vintage and retro business that specializes in doll sales. She owns the shop with her daughter, Lisa Pagan. During the Rose Bowl Flea Market, they usually make about 20-30 sales mostly to regular customers/doll aficionados.

I'm currently researching a story about an underground office park. Tucked under the Missouri landscape and etched into miles and miles of limestone, 9 local companies are conducting business underground.

The space stays a constant 64° to 68°. I am trying to figure out if these businesses are saving money on energy costs, but have yet to get any real numbers. Two separate businesses have both said that what they save on heat and air conditioning, they spend on dehumidifiers.

Rogland waits at the Millennium Hotel in St. Louis, Mo to talk to the soldiers and families of National Guard 1138th Transportation Unit before they deploy to Afghanistan this spring. This is part of a Yellow Ribbon Program, which is geared towards teaching service men, women, and families about the services that are available to them while a loved one is deployed overseas. I had an assignment at a local school's band and choir performance last night. Due to some oversight by the producers, the singers stood on stage with absolutely no lighting on their faces. Junior Krystal Peterson sweeps the set before the first dress rehearsal. Peterson has no desire to act in the front of the audience, but said she prefers to work back stage. "I want to work with technology. That's why I'm ok with working behind the scenes," Peterson said. "You get to watch the end of the production and you get to see what you put together."

Ice Cream Man, Tin Winfield, has worked in the Maplewood, Mo area since 2008. "It is all about the kids," says Winfield. A salesman by trade, Winfield plans to sell hot tubs after the ice cream truck season ends next week. My first time in Texas. These are taken at a conservation area about 30 miles southwest of Texarkana. The stray dog-affectionately nick-named Bobler-tracked us down to the river. We had given him a treat after seeing him on the side of the road. Somehow he found us about an hour and several miles later. He fished with us all night. Thank goodness he ran off, because I would have no doubt brought him home with me.

Dear Prudence: Meet Mary Lee Sebastian

Ninety-year-old Mary Lee Sebastian is a shrewd business-woman. She has been her whole life. Through her career, she was able to finance her own home in Columbia, Missouri; a home which she lived in until a little over 5 years ago. It was then that Sebastian drove her car down the street, got out of the car with the engine still running, and walked all the way back to her garden: the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The incident also marks the beginning of Sebastian’s move to Candlelight Lodge, an assisted living residence.
The move was quite a transition for such a self-sufficient woman. Never married, Sebastian created a life for herself in an era where women typically married and stayed at home. She worked odd jobs as a secretary and became proficient at typing and shorthand. Though she no longer works, she still treats most matters as if they are business. Her only gripe about life is that the Candlelight facility does not treat her stay there as if it is business. She doesn’t let this ruin her time. Sebastian goes to most of the scheduled activities such as exercises, bingo, and dances. With no immediate family, the only visitors she receives are her sister’s children. The visits are rare.

So I am thinking about going back into the studio to shoot this vertically and add another snowflake. This would give the shot more movement. Plus, I wouldn't mind trying to get the light a little hotter right where the snowflake hangs. Anyway, this shoot was fun. Although, I felt like a weirdo buying Christmas decorations when the kid right in front of me was buying his Halloween costume:)
